Theory of Change

The Challenge of Curriculum Adoption in Classrooms
The context
When teachers are asked to adopt a new curriculum, they are often required to absorb extensive training, instructional frameworks, and pedagogical guidance upfront. In practice, however, it’s difficult to recall this information or access the right materials in real time—especially during a live classroom lesson where time and attention are limited.

The problem of curriculum complexity
High-quality curricula are intentionally comprehensive and research-backed, often spanning thousands of pages across teacher guides, lesson plans, assessments, and supplemental resources. While this depth is a strength, it also makes it challenging for educators to quickly find precise, lesson-specific guidance at the moment of instruction.

The need for on-demand support
As a result, teachers may struggle to fully implement the curriculum as designed. These barriers are particularly acute for new, substitute, or transitioning teachers, and can lead to inconsistent instruction, reduced confidence in delivery, and missed opportunities to maximize student learning outcomes.

Background and Needs
The limits of traditional classroom support
Curriculum implementation relied heavily on in-person professional development, embedded teacher guides, and an extensive online knowledge base spanning more than 30,000 pages of instructional content. These resources were designed to ensure fidelity and depth, offering educators detailed explanations of pedagogy, lesson structure, and student support. However, they assumed that teachers could internalize this information in advance or navigate lengthy materials outside of class time.

Real-time classroom challenges
In practice, many teachers found it difficult to recall specific guidance while teaching or to quickly locate relevant materials during a live lesson. This challenge was especially pronounced when responding to student questions, differentiating instruction, or teaching unfamiliar content. Without fast, in-the-moment access to curriculum support, real-time adoption suffered—limiting instructional effectiveness and reducing opportunities to fully support student learning.
Interventions & Process
AI teaching assistant
Gooey supported Open Up Resources in building an AI-powered teaching assistant embedded directly within their interactive classroom platform. The assistant delivers curriculum-specific answers drawn from more than 30,000 pages of Open Up content and is designed to understand lesson, unit, and course context. By offering real-time teaching aids during live instruction, it enables teachers to access accurate guidance without leaving the classroom workflow.
Iterative process
Open Up Resources collaborated closely with the Gooey team to iterate on multiple versions of the assistant, refining math rendering, improving knowledge base accuracy, and strengthening evaluation methods. This ongoing, feedback-driven process ensured the assistant met the high reliability and pedagogical standards required for daily classroom use.

Outcomes
Teacher testing
The AI assistant was tested with Open Up’s teacher leaders in residence, who provided feedback on accuracy, usability, and math rendering, and identified areas for refinement. It achieved high accuracy in relevance scoring (up to 95%) through Gooey’s evaluation framework. Early teacher leader testing showed strong usability, with improvements in math rendering and curriculum-specific responses.
Context-aware and trusted support
The AI assistant now delivers highly relevant, lesson-, unit-, and course-specific responses, drawing directly from more than 30,000 pages of curriculum content. By grounding answers in the exact instructional context, it provides teachers with timely, accurate guidance during live lessons. Teacher leaders have validated the assistant as a valuable real-time classroom support tool, noting its usefulness in strengthening confidence, improving instructional consistency, and supporting more effective student learning experiences.
